On occasion, it is possible to fell trees in one piece using accurate cuts to the bottom of the tree and using wedges to make sure that the tree falls the right way. While it is possible to take a tree down this way, usually it is only done this way for small trees with very small canopies that can fall without impacting on any structure or vegetation. Trees felled like this are cut into conveniently sized pieces for removal once on the ground.
Taking down larger trees usually necessitates the removal of large branches and even sections of the upper trunk — prior to making the final cuts and felling the bulky lower trunk.
