Leylandii Conifer Shaping and Reduction in Sutton Coldfield

We have seen over-zealous cutting of conifers and hedges lead to them browning or falling into decline. We are able to carefully trim them into attractively shaped trees whilst always considering their long-term health.
Leylandii — the fastest-growing and most commonly encountered conifer in our area. Requires regular trimming to stay manageable; responds well to the one-third rule but will not recover from hard cutting into brown wood.
Thuja — often planted as an alternative to leylandii with a softer, more feathery appearance. Generally slower-growing and more forgiving of shaping, but still susceptible to browning if cut too hard.
Cupressus and Lawson's cypress — popular ornamental conifers with a distinctive columnar or conical shape. Best maintained with light, regular trimming rather than heavy reduction.
Pine, spruce and fir — less common in domestic gardens but we work on them regularly. Pines respond differently to trimming than leylandii — cutting into old wood on a pine will not produce new growth. Each species requires a tailored approach.

How much can you take off a conifer?
As a general rule, we can safely reduce a conifer by up to one third of its height or width in a single cut. Taking more than this — especially cutting into old brown wood — risks the tree failing to recover. We'll always advise you on what's achievable before we start.
Can a browning conifer be saved?
It depends on the cause. If the browning is caused by cutting into old wood (brown from lack of light), the tree will not regrow from those brown sections. If the browning is recent — caused by drought, disease, or frost — there's a chance. We can assess on site and give you an honest answer.
Can a conifer be reduced by half?
Removing half the height in one session is generally too much for most conifer species and will cause irreversible browning. We'd suggest a staged approach — taking a third this year and returning in 2–3 years for a further reduction if needed. This gives the tree the best chance of recovering well.
Do you remove the stump after felling a conifer?
Not automatically — stump removal is a separate service using stump grinding equipment. We can carry out both in the same visit or on a separate day. We'll quote for stump removal at the same time as the conifer work.
